Some Basic Notes
The origin of the tarot is a mystery, but we do know that the cards were used
in Italy as early as the 15th century as a popular card game. The roots of the
tarot remain in the occult tradition. The face of tarot, unfortunately, still
holds the visions of a wrinkled old crone in a musty, candlelit room offering
up predictions of impending doom.
Although interest has expanded in the last few decades to include many different perspectives and has brought about positive changes, most religions shun the cards and the scientific community denies any validity.
The tarot is most commonly viewed as a tool for divination, but just as psychotherapy, dream interpretation and meditation all play a role in offering up our truths, so does the tarot. The visualization and symbolism of the cards awaken our inner wisdom and allow it access to our conscious mind.
Traditionally a reading involves one seeking answers from the cards and one interpreting the message the cards relay. Each card, its suit and position in the layout, affect the meaning and interpretation of the reading. There is, however, much more that takes place in a reading than the simplicity of explained tradition.
Through
the tarot we are offered a window into our reality. The meaning comes from that
part of ourselves that is aware of our needs and leads us in the direction we
need to go. Some refer to this awareness as the soul, the subconscious or the
higher self. The tarot enables us to reach the voice of this inner wisdom and
receive the answers we seek.
As we look at the cards before us we each form a different story and present a different conclusion, based on what we hold in our unconscious mind. Using the power of the unconscious mind, our realities are revealed; as the tarot becomes the mirror that reflects back the hidden aspects of our own unique awareness.
It is our inner wisdom, which offers the source of all meaning. It is through
this inner wisdom that we are able to connect to the tarot. Through the
tarot we are able to hear the messages being sent from our higher self or unconscious
mind and bring those messages to a conscious awareness.
We do not need the tarot to access our inner wisdom but until we can incorporate it as second nature, the tarot will take us there.
